It appears most of his family knew (and had known) his diagnosis for years - including his wife - but just not him. I genuinely cannot see why they wouldn't have told him. Though the sealed letter on a train thing makes for good copy - like out of some Agatha Christie version of Grey's Anatomy! What did it for me was the picture of him at 13 in his cricket gear, having no idea of what was to come and that he'd only live 17 more years ... Sad, but - as you say - ultimately uplifting!
