I was assigned The Scarlet Letter in high school... and loved it!

Last year I wrote about my song, "Dangerous Girl". It was inspired by a young woman I knew from my church days. She had an affair with her Christian high school teacher and later a church pastor. In that piece, I mention that there will be no stoning of her on my watch. If ire is needed, direct it at those in leadership who took advantage of her.

Even during my religious delusions I was not inclined to fits of moralistic hand-wringing. It's always been a bad look.

It's great when literature becomes real life, rather than the other way around. Church girl with Christian high school teacher ... wow.

The Scarlet Letter's a great read - but, for my money, Hawthorne's short stories are even better. Check out 'Rappacini's Daughter' - a poisonous garden, poisonous girl and her mysterious scientist/father - it's a brilliant Gothic story.
